Balfron Tower Typographic Signage install Project.
CASE
BALFRON TOWER IS A LANDMARK BUILDING DESIGNED BY THE MODERNIST ARCHITECT ERNO GOLDFINGER IN 1967.
A CONTROVERSIAL, BOLD, SCULPTURAL PRESENCE IN LONDON’S EAST END.
Monolith Signage.
Erno Goldfinger was approached by the London County Council to draw up the scheme, having become known for his exploration of ideal high-rise plans for London during the war.
These in turn had been inspired by his studies in Paris and the work of Le Corbusier and Auguste Perret.
Note
This signage project took inspiration from vernacular East London Docklands, hand-painted, mid-century lettering. The kind of stuff of ordinary people and place.
The building was erected to rehouse those displaced by the post WW2 building going on around Silvertown and Canada Wharf.
We acknowledge there has been social upheaval as a result of this original construction, and express gratitude toward the warm Poplar community reception locally and especially at JP’s Cafe, in Chrisp St Market.
