What is gold leaf?
Pure gold leaf is an almost impalpable layer of precious metal, obtained by subjecting an ingot to 10 processing phases.
As it is beaten so thinly it can be applied to almost any surface and is ideal for gilding any rigid or flexible material.
There are two primary gold leafing techniques: water gilding (an ancient practice, used today for both the gilding of new signage projects and for restoration lettering, where the gold leaf is applied to historical works from previous eras) and oil gilding (a simpler and faster method where the leaf is laid directly on a sticky adhesive composed of water, alcohol and/or varnish).

Audrey & Wolf curate fine antique and vintage jewellery from Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco eras, through to the modern day. Gilding this Jewellery store came as London began to re-open in early 2022 and with Leather Lane adjacent we had a great range of world food and wines to round off a great couple of days on site.
Wartski
Wartski is a family business specialising in works of art by Carl Fabergé, antique jewellery, silver and objets de vertu. It was founded by Morris Wartski in 1865, its first known premises located in Bangor, North Wales.
In 2011, Wartski of St. James’s made the ring for the wedding of H.R.H Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton. The ring was fashioned from a piece of Welsh gold given to Prince William by Her Majesty The Queen.
In 2005, Wartski made the wedding rings for H.R.H The Prince of Wales and H.R.H The Duchess of Cornwall. Wartski hold the warrants for Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.
