BAKERS TO NGS: A ‘FULHAM BORN LETTERING’ OF FINE FAMILY HISTORIES

Over recent years and since the mid eighties I have frequently been asked to paint the signs on the shops around Chelsea and Kensington. It’s a part of the world that holds rich memories and family history.

Bakers of Fulham c1860-1965

With its distinctive laid back atmosphere created by truly local shops, fine homes and cafes, Fulham was also home to Bakers of Fulham stone restorators – my family owned heritage and a legacy of letter carvers.

Nick created his first sign in 1976 under the guidance of his grandfather, Francis Baker.

Joined by Seraina Baumgartner in 2017.

I first came to Fulham to sign write in 1986 around 100 years after my founding fathers lettered here, 3 generations before me.

Since then I have never ceased to be amazed at the architecture and inspirational writers who had styled the streets alongside my grandfathers.

Today I continue the tradition of writing house numbers, shop signs and drinking in the architectural essence of this wonderful part of London.
