Traditional Signwriter London: House numbers

Intro: Traditional Signwriter London: House Number Painting. & Application Surfaces

• Pillars & Porticos: Large-scale numerals are often hand-painted directly onto masonry gate pillars, columns, or stuccoed frontages using durable, weatherproof signwriter’s enamels.
• Glass Fanlights & Transoms: Numbers painted or gilded on the glass transom above a Victorian or Georgian front door represent a highly popular London heritage style.
• The Brushwork Process: Unlike computer-generated vinyl stencils or sandblasted templates, everything is executed entirely by hand using traditional signwriting quills. The outline is meticulously painted with a steady hand to match the fluid weight changes inherent to true brush-formed typography.

Nick’s career is rooted in an exceptional knowledge of lettering and typography, developed through early graphics training and hands-on experience with renowned signwriters Andrew Whitmore and Richard Apps.

Between 1984–1990, he undertook commercial signwriting and gilding for major London brewery groups, including Watneys, Benskins and Taylor Walker, delivering signage at scale and to demanding production schedules.

This practical foundation continues to inform Nick’s contemporary practice, giving him a distinctive understanding of letterform construction, spacing, hierarchy and application that extends beyond conventional graphic design.
