URBAN DISTRESSED GILD

I’d just completed Dishoom and Taylor Taylor in Shoreditch when the call came in for this special project. Often I will be cleaning my brush after a day’s work in Brick lane or wherever and get a call out of the blue from a client just round the corner – never ceases to amaze me the ripple effect.

Plenty of ripples and cracks on this one as I had the designers in New York checking my every move live on my handset ‘More, More! More distress” – that was the call… I hit it!

As each project went by we got more daring… this one below was the first commission, with great bud calligrapher Irena Szestakova and Daisy Emerson sitting in, both 2 weeks into their mega lettering careers, along the way.

RESTORation sign writing: THE BESPOKE, the AGED, the ORIGINAL SIGNAGE restored.

We restored the early Victorian sign written windows of one of the oldest shops in London: Berry Bros and Rudd.

As part of the process we traced down the original lettering from the original shop in St. James’s and conferred with Pentagram who were in the Brand ID chair.

Our own process opted for the analogue route of pencil trace-downs on site from the ladder. These were then laid out and scanned into Adobe Photoshop.

We compared our artwork alongside Pentagram and combined the two genres deciding to finally allow the brush to fetch out the residual and historical magic.
